Project 3 Light Ideas: Fleeted Awakenings by Andrew Lyman

Fleeted Awakenings by Andrew Lyman.
No details are given about this series, except the description which is:
"exploring the transcendence of memory through time in relation to space."

What I really love about this series is the interesting silhouettes that a created through the use of light behind the subject. The subjects have a real ghostly quality about them.

Time: Final Images & Summary

I found that in the beginning of this project I had found a few really cool interesting precedents which I loved but I struggled to gather a substantial idea from them. Time as a dimension by Fong Qi Wei was definitely in the direction I wanted to go but the images I created lacked a purpose or point. I ended up thinking about my previous assignment about space and I how I tried to create an illusion within an existing space. This is where I attempted to take the photos I had and make some aspects of them appear at night and others during the
day. This I tried in no apparent order which to me didn’t really show time as some of these changes appeared to be unnoticeable. It was also a very difficult technique to achieve as it required cutting out small objects in a scene, and once this was achieve it look as though it had been changed. I struggled with this for quite a while and thought it would be easier if I could some how frame each element making it easier to cut them out.

During the time that I was working on this project I was simultaneously working on a design project for my architecture degree. Much like a lot of big projects it requires a full day of continuous work over the last couple of days before its due. I was on a computer for most of the day and often I found that when I would look out the window and find that it was dark outside I would be surprised as the last time I looked up it was not. This showed me that time was passing by very quickly and unnoticed and I thought I could use this in my photography project.

I took photos of internal spaces during the day and again at night and overlaid the windows of the night images over the daylight images.I struggled with whether to put the night time images on the inside or outside for a while, but due to the light qualities inside and outside it was difficult to see the difference. My final images have the clean cool white light of the day time inside and a warmer yellow light outside, showing a real difference and adding to the illusion. I found that with these images to work I needed to have an appropriate amount
of space showing the inside in the photograph and the entire window and I also needed to have lights or something substantial outside the window as it would not work if there was only darkness.
I’m happy with these images and think they really portray my idea of time passing unnoticed clearly. If I had more time I would work on looking at other places to use as I remained in my flat and found I had very limited spaces and windows to use. Although I did attempt photographs at my home in Whangarei, but due to living in the countryside there was nothing outside the windows.

Time: Photoshoot 8

This room was my other flatmates room and the photos taken from it I believe to have been unsuccessful. I think this was due to the lack of positions I could place the camera. I ended up using the position of being quite close to the windows but after merging the two photos together I found that too much of the image was taken up by the outside and the image was lacking in interior space, therefore the image appeared to be primarily nighttime.

Time: Photoshoot 7

I like this one, looking through the front door, it is a completely different view but not so different that it doesn't work in this series. I also like the way the daylight streams onto the floor inside.

Time: Photoshoot 6

These images are of my flatmates room. This room does not necessarily have a view but there is a good amount of light that comes in through the windows at night which means that it is still successful.

Time: Photoshoot 5

Fifth photoshoot of my bedroom at my flat. Because there are lights which are quite bright outside my window it made the nightime shots much more successful. I have established that using nighttime outside is better for the aesthetic of the photos as well as the narrative that I have chosen of time passing unnoticed.

Time: Photoshoot 4

During the time of my design assignment for architecture I also set up a tripod and took a couple of photos at night and during the day. The first image I put the outside as day and the inside as night but once again it is not obvious that it is night time inside. There is something about having  daylight outside which makes the space inside appear brighter. I really like the lower image and really creates a clear illusion without being to 'cheesy.' There is also a clear definition between inside and outside and nighttime and daytime.
