Time: Final Images & Summary

I found that in the beginning of this project I had found a few really cool interesting precedents which I loved but I struggled to gather a substantial idea from them. Time as a dimension by Fong Qi Wei was definitely in the direction I wanted to go but the images I created lacked a purpose or point. I ended up thinking about my previous assignment about space and I how I tried to create an illusion within an existing space. This is where I attempted to take the photos I had and make some aspects of them appear at night and others during the
day. This I tried in no apparent order which to me didn’t really show time as some of these changes appeared to be unnoticeable. It was also a very difficult technique to achieve as it required cutting out small objects in a scene, and once this was achieve it look as though it had been changed. I struggled with this for quite a while and thought it would be easier if I could some how frame each element making it easier to cut them out.

During the time that I was working on this project I was simultaneously working on a design project for my architecture degree. Much like a lot of big projects it requires a full day of continuous work over the last couple of days before its due. I was on a computer for most of the day and often I found that when I would look out the window and find that it was dark outside I would be surprised as the last time I looked up it was not. This showed me that time was passing by very quickly and unnoticed and I thought I could use this in my photography project.

I took photos of internal spaces during the day and again at night and overlaid the windows of the night images over the daylight images.I struggled with whether to put the night time images on the inside or outside for a while, but due to the light qualities inside and outside it was difficult to see the difference. My final images have the clean cool white light of the day time inside and a warmer yellow light outside, showing a real difference and adding to the illusion. I found that with these images to work I needed to have an appropriate amount
of space showing the inside in the photograph and the entire window and I also needed to have lights or something substantial outside the window as it would not work if there was only darkness.
I’m happy with these images and think they really portray my idea of time passing unnoticed clearly. If I had more time I would work on looking at other places to use as I remained in my flat and found I had very limited spaces and windows to use. Although I did attempt photographs at my home in Whangarei, but due to living in the countryside there was nothing outside the windows.
